Why the Suns made this trade

Uh… because he’s Kevin Durant?

Mat Ishbia made a splash with his first major move as the owner of the team, approving the deal that will place Durant alongside Devin Booker, Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton.

As he showed when he joined the Warriors, Durant is capable of easily sliding into any lineup and finding success. He is currently sidelined with an MCL sprain, but when Phoenix’s core group is fully healthy, the Suns should be a scary opponent.

Why the Nets made this trade

Wojnarowski told ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt that, after the Nets shipped Irving to Dallas, a Durant deal was simply unavoidable.

“Once the Kyrie Irving trade happened, this was a team that Kevin Durant was ready to move on from,” Woj said. “His eyes had been on Phoenix since his trade request last summer. … There was an inevitability to this, that if it wasn’t now, it would probably be after the season.

“And I think for the Nets, for Durant, the timing was right.”

Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes described the trade negotiations as a “collaborative effort” between Durant and Brooklyn to help the All-Star forward find the “right situation.”

Kevin Durant contract details

Durant signed a four-year, $194.2 million deal with the Nets in August 2021. He is under contract through the 2025-26 season.

Season 2022-23 2023-24 2024-25 2025-26
Durant's salary $43.0 million $46.4 million $49.9 million $53.3 million

His current contract doesn’t include a player option, so Durant won’t hit free agency until 2026.
