It’s usually pretty easy to identify which countries are competing at the Olympics. But during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, many may ask exactly what ROC is. ROC is, essentially, the codename for Russia at the 2022 Winter Games.

Nearly 3,000 athletes representing over 90 countries will compete in Beijing, China, in the 2022 Winter Olympics. This will be the first time Beijing has hosted the Winter Olympics. Two nearby cities will also host athletes for outdoor sports, while Beijing will solely host the indoor ice sports.

For the second consecutive Olympic Games, Russia will be competing under a different name. The country was known as the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games and for the 2021 Tokyo Games, they are known as the ROC.

American swimming fans knew coming into the 2021 Tokyo Olympics that there were a few swimmers they could count on for medals. There was Katie Ledecky, the most accomplished women’s swimmer of all time.
