Who was the last American F1 driver?
It has been seven full seasons since an American driver featured on the F1 grid.
That was Alexander Rossi in 2015, who made five race starts as a reserve driver for the now-defunct Marussia F1.
The California product bided his time before earning his first race start, spending two years at Caterham (2012-14) as a backup.
His F1 debut came at the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix, where he replaced Roberto Merhi and rallied from last on the grid to finish a respectable P14.
The aptly-named Scott Speed was the last American to race a full season in F1.
He achieved the feat in 2006 with Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) after progressing through the Red Bull junior system.
Speed had a solid debut season, but he was replaced by Sebastian Vettel mid-way through the following year as results tapered off.

Officially, 157 drivers from the United States have competed in at least one F1 race.
However, the majority of these drivers only participated in the Indianapolis 500, which was included as part of the F1 World Championship in the 1950s.
This leaves a total of 56 American drivers who have competed in other F1 races.
Of those competitors, just two have won the drivers' championship - Mario Andretti (1978) and Phil Hill (1961).
Andretti is the most successful American to have ever raced in F1, taking home 12 race wins and eight poles from his 14 seasons in the sport.
Hill was the first driver from the United States to claim the drivers' title, amassing three race wins in eight seasons.
Who was the last American F1 race winner?
On top of being the last American to win the drivers' championship, Mario Andretti is also the most recent driver from the United States to have won an F1 race.
He emerged victorious at the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix - the same year he won the championship.
Andretti claimed a comfortable victory, finishing the race 1-2 with his Lotus teammate Ronnie Peterson.

Sargeant, a Florida native, began karting as an eight-year-old, progressing through domestic and international competitions.
He made his single-seater debut in 2016 in the Formula 4 UAE Championship with Team Motopark, picking up 15 podium finishes across 18 races that season.
An F3 debut in 2019 followed, winning his first race at Silverstone before adding a second at Spa.
Despite his progress on the racetrack, he had to abort his 2021 move to F2 due to financial reasons and move back to F3.
However, things eventually worked out for the young American, racing twice in F2 at the back end of the 2021 season before earning a full-time seat with Carlin for the following campaign.
Sargeant became the first American driver to take out an F2 race after winning in Austria in 2022, leading to Williams making the call to bring him up to F1 for 2023.
