Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz took his maiden victory in Formula 1 as he held off the chasing pack during an enthralling 2022 British Grand Prix.

In a race that was red flagged on lap one due to a huge accident involving Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu heading into the first corner, the Spaniard held his nerve to fight off attacks from teammate Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton throughout to take his first race win.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez astonishingly fought his way back from an early pit stop to secure P2 whilst home favourite Hamilton completed the podium and took the fastest lap of the race.

World Championship leader Max Verstappen struggled with his car after suffering a puncture early on, which saw him finish the race in P7, whilst Leclerc couldn’t hold on towards the end of the race on his older set of hard tyres and slipped to finish P4 from leading the race on lap 43.

Fernando Alonso, Lando Norris, Mick Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10, while six drivers failed to finish the race at Silverstone.

Sainz holds nerve to end winless streak

Pole-sitter Carlos Sainz probably thought that at one point this afternoon at Silverstone that his wait for a maiden victory in Formula 1 would have to go on a little longer as he struggled for pace.

With team orders dictating that he had to give up P1 to teammate Charles Leclerc in the mid part of the 2022 British Grand Prix, it looked like the Spaniard had missed another golden opportunity to claim top spot for the first time.

But late drama was to unfold when Alpine’s Esteban Ocon stopped on the old start/finish straight and the safety car was launched. Sainz’s quick decision to come into the pits and put on a fresh set of soft tyres for the final 10 laps of the race proved to be a masterstroke.

On the restart, he quickly jumped Leclerc with ease despite his team suggesting that he stay in position to fight off the imposing Lewis Hamilton behind in P3, and had a relatively quiet last few laps to bring home his first race victory on his 150th F1 appearance.

Perez recovers to take a remarkable P2

When Sergio Perez collided with championship rival Leclerc on the opening lap after the early restart at Silverstone, the Mexican driver’s chances of picking up a podium finish looked in tatters.

With his front wing suffering significant damage, a lengthy pit stop had him running towards the back of the pack and seemingly in no man’s land.

But with great pace up his sleeve, the Red Bull driver got himself back into contention and with the help of the late safety car, found himself taking advantage of an almost-free pit stop at the perfect time.

Perez then jumped Hamilton on the restart and later Leclerc to claim another podium position this season, as he remains second in the driver’s standings.

Zhou in good health after horror crash

The 2022 British Grand Prix got off to a dramatic start as Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu suffered a huge crash heading into the opening corner.

The rookie made contact with Mercedes' George Russell, which flipped his car onto its roof. Still upside down, the Alfa then travelled across the gravel before skipping over the barrier and hitting the perimeter fencing in front of the grandstand, which did its job.

FORMULA-1

The race was immediately red flagged as a result, as emergency personnel rushed to the scene. After being checked up on at the circuit’s medical centre, the Chinese driver was released in good health.

2022 F1 British Grand Prix as it happened: commentary and highlights

RACE FINISH: CARLOS SAINZ WINS THE 2022 BRITISH GRAND PRIX!!! The Spanish driver picks up his first win in Formula 1 as he takes the chequered flag in an amazing, action-packed race.

Perez grabs P2 and Hamilton comes homes in P3 to round out the podium places. Leclerc, Alonso, Norris, Verstappen, Schumacher, Vettel and Magnussen complete the top ten and all take home points. Hamilton also takes the fastest lap at Silverstone.

Lap 49: Heart in mouth stuff as Hamilton looks to pass Leclerc down the back straight but Leclerc hangs it around the inside into copse corner at full speed to maintain P3. The Mercedes man finally gets up into P3 at the next corner though as Leclerc struggles on his hard tyres.

Lap 46: WHAT A RACE THIS IS!!! Hamilton jumps both Perez and Leclerc into P2 but then Perez and Leclerc get back through just a few corners later. Hamilton is back down into P4 as a result and is now under pressure from Alonso and Norris. Fantastic racing from all involved.

Lap 44: Sainz leads again!!! His Ferrari team may have asked him to stay behind Leclerc but the Spaniard ignores the orders and breezes past his teammate on the back straight. Perez also jumps Hamilton into P3 on the restart. Incredible stuff!

Lap 43: We’re back under green flag conditions and we have nine laps remaining in this race. Go and grab your popcorn because this could be an entertaining end to the 2022 British Grand Prix with Leclerc, Sainz and Hamilton battling it out for the win here!

Lap 39: The safety car is out!! Ocon stops on the the old start/finish straight and the full course safety car is out. Sainz and Hamilton respond by jumping straight into the pit for soft tyres though Leclerc stays out. That could be a huge decision from him.

Lap 34: Hamilton is in the pits but his team make a slight mess of the pit stop which costs him about 1.5 seconds extra. Crucially, he comes back out on track in P3 behind both Leclerc and Sainz, the later who now sits 4.3 seconds ahead of the British driver.

Lap 32: Leclerc is allowed to pass Sainz by the Ferrari team and he moves up to P2. Hamilton still needs to pit remember and if he did right now, it would be extremely close for the lead of this race when he re-enters the action.

Lap 30: Leclerc asks whether he’s going to be allowed past Sainz and into the lead of this grand prix and his engineer replies with “we can fight”. That’s a very interesting decision given Leclerc’s sheer pace compared to his teammate right now and the fact that Hamilton is matching their times out in front at the moment.

Lap 28: Pierre Gasly is the latest driver to retire from this race, the fifth of the afternoon not to finish the 2022 British GP.

Lap 26: Verstappen pits again but this time onto the hard tyres which will carry him until the end of this race. He’s down in P8 at present which could be best case scenario this afternoon.

Leclerc now pits as well which releases Hamilton into the lead of the British Grand Prix!

Lap 24: Hamilton is absolutely flying here and now sits just 1.5 seconds behind Leclerc who leads this race. He’s taking chunks out of the Ferrari driver’s lap times at every opportunity, though Leclerc does have a bit of damage on his front wing which won’t be helpful.

Lap 22: Sainz is into the pits so Leclerc takes the lead of this British GP for now. Elsewhere, Bottas has been forced to retire from this race.

There’s also a further update from Alfa Romeo on Zhou.

Lap 21: Hamilton is really closing in on the Ferrari pair of Sainz and Leclerc who currently sit P1 and P2 respectively. The gap is down to just 3.1 seconds now as the front two continue to squabble amongst themselves.

Lap 17: Verstappen’s engineer announces that he has rear damage but it’s not a structural problem so he’s able to continue in this race. That said, his performance is way down at the moment.

Hamilton holds the fastest lap as he starts to close the gap to the front two.

Lap 12: Sainz retakes the lead!! Verstappen has a problem of some description and Sainz swoops down the outside of the current world championship leader. The Red Bull driver is straight into the pit stop as a result.

Lap 11: Verstappen leads the British GP!! Sainz ends up having to take avoiding action as his nose fails to turn into the corner and the Dutch driver snatches away P1 heading down the back straight. That’ll be a tough one to swallow for Sainz.

Lap 9: At the front, Verstappen has closed down the gap to Sainz and now has DRS to give him a helping hand in taking the lead of this GP. Leclerc then sits just 1.7 seconds behind in P3.

Lap 6: DRS is enabled as Perez has to pit due that damage he sustained on the restart from his collision with Leclerc. Just after, Hamilton sweeps past Norris to move up to P4.

RACE RESTART: After a lap behind the safety car, we’re back underway here in the 2022 British Grand Prix. What an unbelievable restart to this race as Sainz just about holds off Verstappen to keep the lead of the British GP. Behind those two Leclerc makes contact with Perez who comes away from that tussle with a damaged front wing.

Norris also jumped Hamilton into P5 on the restart as well, though Russell couldn’t restart the race.

Red flag: The race will restart at 15:56 local time so in just under ten minutes time. It’s likely to be a standing start and as mentioned before the grid order will be reset to the starting grid so Sainz on pole, Verstappen P2, Leclerc P3 and so on.

Red flag: The FIA still haven’t announced a restart time but they have said that the order of the drivers will reset to the starting order.

Elsewhere, protestors got onto the track just after the red flag was waved. That incident has now been dealt with by the local authorities.

Red flag: We’ve finally seen a replay of the incident into the first corner and it’s a huge incident in which Zhou ends up on his roof down the start/finish straight. His car rolled across the gravel before it flipped up over the barriers and hit the catch fencing.

There’s no news in terms of a restart time here yet at Silverstone but Albon is also at the medical centre alongside Zhou. It looks like those are the two drivers who are definitely out of this race for obvious reasons whilst Russell, Ocon and Tsunoda all look likely to restart if their cars can be fixed in time.

Red flag: The Sky Sports commentary team have thankfully announced that Zhou Guanyu is out of his stricken Alfa Romeo car but is heading to hospital as a precaution. All other drivers are also fine and accounted for.

We still haven’t seen a replay of the incident but elsewhere, Verstappen stole the lead from Sainz whilst Hamilton jumped Perez and Leclerc into P3.

Lap 1: As mentioned before, the red flag is out here and it looks like a very serious crash into the opening corner. We’ve seen no replays yet of the incident.

RACE START: And we’re off here at Silverstone! 142,000 Formula One fans roar as the cars get off the line but it’s an instant red flag as there’s a huge crash into the opening corner. It looks like Russell, Zhou Guangyu, Tsunoda, Ocon and Albon are all involved.

2 mins to lights out: The cars are all out on track to begin their formation lap ahead of the 2022 British Grand Prix.

15 mins to lights out: Someone who could prove a handful this afternoon for the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers ahead is Lewis Hamilton who starts his home GP in P5 this time around.

He’s remarkably won here eight times before during his career and after several improvements of late, his Mercedes car seems far quicker than at the start of the season. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on here!

30 mins to lights out: Verstappen is first out of the pit lane and heading towards the starting grid where his team is waiting for the current world champion. He’s closely followed by a few others as the Red Arrows fly overhead much to the capacity crowd’s excitement!

45 mins to lights out: After a rather wet qualifying session yesterday threw up a slight surprise in Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz taking his maiden F1 pole position, the forecast seems to suggest that we’re in for a mostly dry race this afternoon. That’ll be music to the ears of Max Verstappen in particular who looked lightning quick in practice 3 yesterday as he looks to steal a further march on his championship rivals this afternoon.

Before that though, we’ve been treated by birthday boy Sebastian Vettel who has been running around the famous Silverstone track in a 1992 Williams car which he actually owns. The car has been running on carbon neutral fuels instead though as the German driver continues his strong statement against climate change.

1 hour to lights out: Welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the British Grand Prix, the tenth race of the 2022 Formula 1 calendar.

Formula One world champion Max Verstappen took the race win last time out at the Canadian Grand Prix as he further extended his lead at the top of the 2022 drivers' championship.

The Dutch driver fought off a late charge from Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to claim his sixth victory of the season from nine races, though the Spaniard has already responded this weekend by claiming pole position for today’s British Grand Prix.

Elsewhere, British driver Lewis Hamilton claimed just his second podium finish of the season last time out as Mercedes begin to improve on their early season race pace. Hamilton has remarkably won seven of the past eight races at Silverstone, though he and his car will have to be at their very best to continue that dominance today.

British Grand Prix 2022 starting grid

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz claimed his first ever pole position in Formula One during qualifying for the 2022 British Grand Prix as he fought off stiff competition from Max Verstappen and teammate Charles Leclerc to claim top spot.

In an intriguing qualification session that was largely affected by ever-changing wet conditions, Sainz proved the best of the bunch as he stole pole position from Verstappen late on by just 0.072 seconds.

Verstappen himself comfortably finished top in both Q1 and Q2 as he once again conquered the difficult conditions and was all but set to take his fourth pole position of the season before his last flying lap of the session was interrupted by yellow flags due to Leclerc spinning in front of him.

Meanwhile, Sainz saved his best for last to become the 104th different pole sitter in F1 history.
