WBC and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. looked like he hadn’t missed a beat after 17 months away from the ring. Inside a packed AT&T Stadium in Texas on Saturday night, Spence bullied Yordenis Ugas to become WBA welterweight champion.

Up next for Spence? The hope is a date with destiny against WBO champion Terence Crawford.

“Everyone knows who I want next. I want Terence Crawford next. That’s the fight that I want, that’s the fight everybody else wants. Terence, I’m coming for that motherf—ing belt,” Spence said after the fight.

The fight was hard-hitting, with neither competitor resting. Spence’s volume shots were a key factor as he landed multiple jabs and uppercuts. Ugas' right eye was shut after multiple shots and the ring doctor had to look at it multiple times. By the 10th round, the doctor had seen enough.

Ugas had one moment to stop this fight, in the sixth round. Spence’s mouthpiece came out while Ugas landed a big shot to the face that pushed Spence back. But the referee paused the fight — and Ugas' momentum — so Spence could get the mouthpiece. Spence took advantage and never looked back.

Before the stoppage, the judges had scored the fight 88-82, 88-82, and 88-83, all in favor of Spence.

According to CompuBox, Spence landed 216 shots compared to 96 for Ugas. Spence landed 192 power shots, and only landed single-digit blows once, in the first round. Spence landed 46 shots alone in the eighth. Ugas landed 10 shots or fewer in six rounds.

Spence (28-0) remains undefeated. He last fought in 2020, beating Danny Garcia. “The Truth” was supposed to fight Manny Pacquiao, but a detached retina stopped that from happening. Ugas, who replaced Spence and beat Pacquiao, had his winning streak ended at four.
